The Features

This time we had to draft the men folk in to find out which aftershave balm performed the best after attacking their chin with a razor! Were they left with skin as smooth and soft as a baby’s bum or did the balms fail to soothe.

Here are the results in reverse order:

Clarins
Clinique Happy

6. Arran Aromatics Post Shave Soother: £7.49 for 300ml

This product unfortunately didn’t last very long as the smell was not very appealing – even before it was applied to the face. The pump action dispenser was very practical however and it wouldn’t look out of place in the bathroom, although it looked rather feminine for a man’s product.

5. Lush Cosmetic Lad: £6.80 for 45g

Rather disappointing for one of our favourite companies – the lid on the tub wouldn’t stay on properly after first opening it and it left our man’s face rather greasy after use. It smelt very fruity which is fine if you want to completely disguise the smell of your aftershave.

4. Nivea for Men Sensitive Aftershave Balm: £3.79 for 100ml

Aesthetically pleasing – more masculine looking than some of the others, but it’s not that easy to get the balm out when it starts to get near the bottom of the bottle. Our tester also had an incident involving slightly greasy hands, the glass bottle and a ceramic wash basin! Very soothing and made skin fell more supple and soft.

3. Virgin Vie Multi-Talented Moisturiser: £12.00 for 75ml

Very neutral packaging so it will fit easily into any bathroom environment. Also like the fact that it stands on its lid so the moisturiser dispenses easily, even when it’s running out. It did feel nice on the skin but it had a strange smell after application even though it’s supposed to be odourless. It didn’t particularly mattify the skin as stated but it did hydrate it.

2. Clinique Happy Aftershave Balm: £25 for 100ml

Gorgeous aesthetically with a high perceived value though similar problems as with the Nivea product – dropped on several occasions due to slippy hands and not easy to get out when it’s nearly finished. It smelt fantastic and replaces the need for a separate aftershave. It’s very soothing on application and leaves the skin feeling hydrated and smooth all day.

1. Clarins Men Moisture Balm: £21.50 for 50ml

The dispenser is ergonomically friendly, practical and elegant. It smells fantastic – fresh and expensive. You don’t need to use lots as a little works wonders on the skin. Our tester didn’t want to stop using it but we made him as he had to test the others! Fantastic.
